To all those people dumping rabbits in parks, fields, in boxes by the trash, in dumpsters, or anywhere else. You are giving your rabbit a death sentence. Domestic rabbits can not survive outside. They may make it a few days, sometimes a few weeks but they will be killed by predators eventually. Now with RVHD2 a deadly virus to rabbits you are putting them in danger of getting a horrible deadly disease.

Wild rabbits dig burrows and go underground to get away from the heat and predators, and are much faster and aware of the danger. Domestic rabbits don’t know how to do that. They will have horrible deaths outside, they don’t know how to protect themselves from predators and the heat. By dumping your rabbit you are killing it.

This year has been the worst year I can remember in over thirty years of rescue. I am getting calls all day long about unwanted rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas.

People, PLEASE do your research before getting a rabbit it’s a twelve to the fourteen-year commitment of caring for them. Guinea pigs around an eight to ten-year commitment, and chinchillas a twenty-year commitment.

Do NOT get rabbits for children. They are not toys, they don’t like to be held or played with. What happens when the children are not interested in the rabbit anymore or when it’s time to go off to college or move out? Will you care for the rabbit? People often say yes, but when the time comes that answer often changes.

Rabbits are a lot of care and vet care is very expensive. If your rabbit becomes ill (and they often do) you can easily end up with a $500 vet bill, just to start with. Are you prepared and able to do this?

YOU can stop this horrible problem for rabbits by doing lots of research and talking to your local rabbit rescues all about rabbits BEFORE you get a rabbit.

No animal deserves to die because of human ignorance!

Bunny Bunch is very lucky to have lots of wonderful adopters that know what it’s like to have a rabbit and have given many of our rabbit’s wonderful homes. Please share this message in hopes of stopping more rabbits from being dumped.

Unlike humans, cats and dogs, rabbits can not cool themselves by panting or sweating. They have a fur coat so they overheat very easily even in the shade outside and in your home. Sadly every summer I get lots of calls about rabbits overheating and they don’t all make it.

Due to RVHD2, the heat, parasites, and predators, rabbits should be living in your home 100% even with the vaccine.

  • Keep your rabbits indoors in air conditioning.
  • Always have a large crock of water at all times.
    *Set up your phone to check your house temperature for when you are not home.

If you don’t have A/C, get a wall unit or portable A/C unit. Have a thermometer in your rabbit’s room so you can check the temperature.

  • Freeze 2-liter soda bottles full of water so rabbits can lay against them to keep cool. Have extras in the freezer at all times.
  • Use floor tiles for rabbits to lay on to keep cool.
  • Use fans to circulate the air.
  • Feed refrigerated veggies.
  • Never leave your rabbit alone in the summer without AC.
  • Check your rabbit often for signs of overheating such as:
    • Breathing hard
    • Wet around the mouth
    • Laying stretched out
    • Disoriented

If your rabbit overheats:

  • Mist the ears with cool water, or wrap cool wash clothes around the ears.
  • Lay your rabbit on a wet towel
  • Go straight to your rabbit vet.

*If you don’t have A/C take your rabbits to a friend’s or relatives’ house during the hot weather above 80 degrees. Or take to bunny your rabbits to bunny boarding places like CottonTailInn.com in  Southern California.

Please be careful to really check on your rabbits during the hot weather.

It’s been a little over a year now since the first case of RVHD2 was reported in California. Since then there have been more cases and
 it looks like it’s here to stay.

This is a reminder for those of you who got your rabbits vaccinated right away last year that the annual vaccine is needed. Check the date on your vaccine paperwork so you don’t miss it.

Rabbits living indoors can get RVHD2 too. So to be on the safe side get your rabbit vaccinated.

Here at Bunny Bunch we vaccinate all our rabbits. We suggest keeping your rabbits 100% indoors even if they have had the vaccine, as the vaccine is not 100% effective.

MEET FRANKY - JUST RESCUED!

This poor little chinchilla was left in a park in a box. The person that found him called to see if we could take him, he had an injured leg.
Once he arrived I checked his leg and found it was broken. I got him on pain meds right away, kept him in a small comfy place over night and took him to one of our vets this am to have his leg amputated.

We don’t know how his leg was broken. I do hear of this when people use cages that have wire bottoms or ledges, wheels that are not solid, or have other unsafe items in their chins cage. We have taken in chinchillas before with an injured or amputated back leg. The chins adjust well and will live life like normal. Franky will be coming home with me tomorrow night for recovery.

Obviously, the people that had him did not want to pay a vet bill. So horrible they just left him in a park.
Franky did very well with surgery and is cozying up with me during his recovery! Donate today to help with Franky’s care!
